Did you know that June is Vitiligo Awareness month? Neither did I, until I had the pleasure of meeting June’s Gem, Tiffany W. Jefferson. At first glance, I had no idea that Tiffany was living with Vitiligo. Getting to know Tiffany has enlightened me about the condition, and I hope that this post does the same for you.
What Is Vitiligo?
According to NAIMS…
Vitiligo is a disorder in which white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. This happens because the cells that make pigment in the skin are destroyed. Vitiligo can also affect the mucous membranes. The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally, however, it is more noticeable in people with dark skin.
In 2010, I found a small spot on my hand. I went to my family doctor, and he told me that I have the same condition as Michael Jackson. It changed my life forever. My skin color disappeared right before my eyes, and there was nothing that I could do about it. It wasn’t an invisible condition, but an exterior disorder that everyone could see.
Tiffany coped by creating a support system…
After I had to cope with Vitiligo for one year, I knew I could not let another person deal with this disorder alone. I started the Sumter Vitiligo Support Group in 2011. At this time, it is the only Vitiligo support group in South Carolina. There are currently 7 active members. We meet on the second Monday of each month at the North Hope Center in Sumter.
What Tiffany Wants You to Know About Vitiligo…
Vitiligo is not contagious. The condition can affect anyone at any time. At the current time, there is no cure for Vitiligo. The public can support the cause by being aware of disorder, and to not be afraid of it when they see someone who is living with Vitiligo. I hope that the community will support our first annual Vitiligo Support Walk on June 20th (see attached flyer for details).
Thanks to Tiffany for being open about her experience with Vitiligo. I am certain that her story will serve as inspiration to so many others who are living with this condition.
Be sure to support the upcoming Vitiligo Support Walk!!
